scratching

scratching
Most commonly heard in rap and hip hop songs, the technique of scratching involves manually moving a record back and forth, so that one small section—usually only one sound—is heard backwards and forwards, repeatedly. Essentially, the resulting sound is used to provide an extra rhythmic texture to the track. The rise of trip hop music (jazz-influenced, largely instrumental hip hop) has moved scratching to the forefront, with songs such as The Herbalizer’s ‘Scratchy Noise’ employing the technique to great effect. For the most part, though, scratching remains a tool for creative DJing, with Coldcut’s 1995 Journeys By DJ mix album containing many fine examples of the technique in use.
